BEL AIR, Md. – All four top seeds held serve on the first day of the 2013 MD JUCO Women’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, setting the stage for an exciting Quarterfinal Thursday inside the APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College.
The top four seeds; No. 1 Harford, No. 2 Chesapeake, No. 3 Montgomery and No. 4 CCBC Dundalk, each received a bye into the quarterfinal round on Thursday, and their opponents all hosted opening round games on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Fighting Owls will take on No. 8 Southern Maryland at 7 p.m., after the Hawks disposed of No. 9 Garrett, 59-45. Morgan Jordan scored 12 of her team-high 19 points from the charity stripe, as CSM outscored the Lakers 36-23 after the break.
No. 7 Baltimore City advanced to take on the defending champion Skipjacks with a 78-50 win over No. 10 Prince George’s. The Panthers were led by Iman Scott’s double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds and Tiara France’s 19-point, 8-rebound, 8-assist effort.
No. 6 Hagerstown took down No. 11 Howard, 60-46, early on Tuesday. The Hawks now have a 2 p.m. date on Thursday with No. 3 Montgomery thanks to Sasha Orr’s 20 points and Diedra Burch’s 15 markers.
No. 4 CCBC Dundalk will take on No. 5 Frederick after the Cougars defeated No. 12 Allegany, 79-61. Shakena Williams had an opening round-best 31 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Jasmine Walker added a double-double of her own with 21 points and 11 caroms.
