Maryland JUCO Names September Student Athletes of the Month
BALTIMORE (October 11, 2017) – The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) today announced that it has selected Youness Benmouna (men’s soccer), Erin Moran (women’s soccer), Katelyn Atchison (volleyball), Hassan Eissa (men’s cross country), and Caroline McCarthy (women’s cross country) as its Student Athletes of the Month for September 2017.
Benmouna (Montgomery College | Northwest H.S.) scored 16 goals and had 15 assists for 47 points in his team’s first 13 games. He collected four hat tricks, including a career-high four goals scored in Montgomery’s season-opener against Montgomery County Community College (Pa.) on August 27. Benmouna currently leads the conference in points (47), tied for third in goals (16), and is tied for first in assists (15).
Moran (Community College of Baltimore County, Essex | Perry Hall H.S.) scored 19 goals and collected three assists for 41 points. A freshman athletically, she has fought through two season-ending injuries since fall 2015 to get back on the pitch. Moran had three hat tricks in her team’s first nine games, including a career-high six goals against Cumberland County College (September 16). She currently leads Maryland JUCO with 24 goals and 51 points.
Atchison (Frederick Community College | Dothan H.S.) registered 174 kills and 189.5 points in the first month of the season. She averaged 14.5 kills per match and 15.8 points per game. On September 2 against Patrick Henry, she finished with 21 kills and points, both season-highs until October 3 when she tallied 22 points versus Hagerstown Community College. Atchison leads the conference in kills per set (4.13), is third in kills (194), and fourth in points (211.5).
Eissa (Harford Community College | Homeschool) is arguably the backbone of the Fighting Owls men’s cross country team. He finished 33rd overall in the 8k at the Mustang Stampede, hosted by Stevenson University, with a time of 29:38, and 2nd at the Goldey-Beacom Classic with a time of 28:20. The majority of runners at both races were from four-year universities. Eissa also finished second in the 5k (17:57) at the Harford Meet on September 15.
McCarthy (Harford Community College | Paterson Mill H.S.) finished 30th out of 76 runners at the Mustang Stampede with a 6k time of 27:49. She finished 2nd in the Harford Meet with a time of 23:17 in the 5k. On September 22, she continued to improve, this time at the Goldey-Beacom, running a 5k in 22:48, and finishing 10th in a field of 65 runners.
