Harford Men's Lacrosse Assists Community

By Adam Fornwalt

BEL AIR, Md. – Members of the Harford men's lacrosse team partnered with VolunTEEN Nation and Harford Family House in recent weeks for a pair of community service activities.

"I am proud to lead a team that is so ready and willing to serve its local community," said Harford head men's lacrosse coach Aaron Verardi. "We are lucky to have a great relationship with such amazing organizations in the Harford County area."

The first event, Support a Scholar, presented by VolunTEEN Nation, saw men's lacrosse student-athletes build desks for families in the community who don't have the means to provide a workspace for their children's online learning environment. VolunTEEN Nation provides a database of volunteer opportunities in all 50 states, the only database of its kind.

Several men's lacrosse players would later partner with Harford Family House, moving furniture and cleaning the interior and exterior of an entire house so that the incoming family could move in safely. Harford Family House is the largest provider of transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness and unaccompanied adults ages 18-24 in Harford County. Since 1989, they have served more than 600 families and 1,900 individuals.

"The staff at Harford Family House were so grateful and couldn't say enough wonderful things about these student-athletes," said Harford Family House Board of Directors member and Harford assistant tennis coach Beth Mosser. "Kudos to them and coach Verardi for their commitment to our community!"

Fighting Owls men's lacrosse is coming off a COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. In 2019, Harford claimed a single-season high 13 wins, as well as its first Maryland JUCO Conference and Region XX championships. They earned the No. 2 seed in the 2019 NJCAA National Championship tournament, becoming the first Maryland team since 2010 to receive a first round bye.
