The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Wolf was selected as this Region IV Winner and then selected as the National Winner. The committee selected him after they read his essay on his views and philosophy on helping others. He wrote:
"It's not only what you say, how you feel, but it's also what you do that tells a lot about a person. Sharing a simple smile can help brighten someone's day and can even make a difference. Growing up I was raised with the philosophy of helping others. I learned it from my mom. Help others and expect nothing in return. Over the years, I volunteered at our church bingo, the soup kitchen, Our Daily Bread, and other programs. Every summer I volunteer at my mom's school, moving boxes and furniture for teachers who are changing rooms. I've grown up doing chores and learned how to pitch in and help others.
In high school I was an active participant in Tri –M, DECA, and Marching Band for four years. In each group, we really enjoyed helping and serving our community in a number of ways. We marched in various parades, played during ceremonies, visited nursing homes, and collected gifts for a local women's shelter every year. Even though I'm not in Tri-M anymore, I continue to collect donations each year for the women's shelter at Christmas. I feel that it's important to give to others, especially when we have so much.
On the tennis team I try to be helpful and supportive of
others during practice, play, and even of their
accomplishments. I'm not the most outgoing person, but I
found that becoming involved and supporting others on my team,
helps everyone. It has helped develop new friendships and it
makes our team strong."
Wolf is the third regional award winner in Harford history,
after Felipe dos
Santos claimed the Region IV Award as a freshman in
2011 and Hunter
McCawley won the Region IV Award in 2012.
Assistant coach Michael
Kennedy earned Region IV Assistant Coach of the
Year.
