MDJUCO Men's Basketball Tournament: #5 Cecil Finishes #4 Prince George's to Earn Semifinal Spot

By Taylor Moore and Robert Eriksen

Hagerstown, Md. – McKale Williams hit his second of two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put the Seahawks ahead by six and Cecil held on for an 81-78 win against Prince George's in a quarterfinal game of the Maryland Juco Men's Basketball Tournament.

Hassan Corbin led the Seahawks with 23 points on 10-20 shooting. He also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Shylier Ringgold finished with 14 points (5-7) and Cornell Corbin had 13 (5-12).

"I think defensively for us, it was about picking people up full court and not allowing [Prince George's] to just bring the ball up court," said Cecil head coach Ed Durham. "Prince George's still had some great looks; they have some great finishers. Morales is a great player and they hit some tough shots. I don't know if there was one turning point of this game."

The two teams were as evenly match as their tournaments seeds indicated, as the game began with scoring runs.

A 10-0 run by the Owls began just 2:21 into the game before Cecil was able to stop their attack with 14:43 remaining.

The Seahawks countered with a 7-0 run of their own beginning at 12:32 that lasted nearly four minutes

The Owls retaliated quickly with their second 10-0 run of the half, which was filed with aggressive defensive rebounding used to quickly transition up the floor and convert.

As the half began to come to a close, both teams settled in, creating plenty of points in the paint along with second chance opportunities.

Corbin Hassan of Cecil led all scorers with 15 points at the half and his team was ahead 39-38.

The second half started with good back and forth play as both teams improved defensively.

Cecil used a modest 12-7 run to increase its lead to 51-45 in the first six minutes.

Prince George's refused to go quietly into the night.

Alex Morales completed a 3-point play during a 19-8 Owls' run to put them up 64-59 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Cecil called a timeout and went on a 9-2 run on the other side to regain the lead 68-66 with six minutes to go.

Morales continued his stellar play, despite Cecil's momentum swing, for Prince George's as he notched a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds.

The Owl's Darren Rivers tied the game at 74 with an aggressive move down low and just under 3 minutes to go.

Both teams' free throw success was tested.

Darnell Jenkins gave Cecil a 78-75 lead with 49 seconds to left.

Cecil's efficiency from the line forced Prince George's to hurry its offense, leading to two costly turnovers down the stretch and allowing Cecil to seal the 81-78 win.

Cecil will face the winner of Baltimore City/Southern Maryland tomorrow at 7 p.m. in a semifinal game.
