Maryland JUCO Announces April Student-Athlete of the Month Awards

BALTIMORE (May 18, 2018) – The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) today announced that it has selected Spencer Smith (baseball), Reece Wiseman (men's lacrosse), Madeline Szanyi (women's lacrosse), Sarah Heagy (softball), Diamond Turner (women's outdoor track & field) and Milan Wall (men's outdoor track & field) as its Student Athletes of the Month for April 2018.

Smith (Harford Community College | Northern Durham H.S.) had a slash line of .397/.500/.985 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs in 21 games in April. On April 28, he went 7-for-8 with two doubles, two homers, eight RBIs and six runs scored in a double header against ASA. Smith recorded a hit in 14 of his last 15 games in April, including eight multi-hit games. He led the conference in homeruns (19), was second in RBIs (69) and fourth in slugging percentage (.779).

Wiseman (Harford Community College | Perry Hall H.S.) scored 24 goals and added 10 assists in seven games. He tallied a career-high eight goals on April 5 against CCBC Essex, as the Fighting Owls defeated the Knights for the first time in over 10 years. He had multi-goal games in all seven of Harford's games in April, including two goals in his team's 16-8 NJCAA Region XX semifinal victory over Anne Arundel Community College on April 26.

Szanyi (Anne Arundel Community College | South River H.S.) helped lead the Riverhawks to an 8-1 record in April and No. 2 national ranking, the team's highest since 2013. She scored 29 goals and had 27 assists (56 points), including five goals and three assists in a 25-14 win over Howard Community College in an NJCAA Region XX semifinal game on April 30. Szanyi turned in a multi-goal performance in all nine games in April.

Heagy (CCBC Catonsville | Eastern Tech) finished the month with a slash line of .718/.747/.910, had 24 RBIs, 13 doubles and one triple at the plate. On the mound, she went 8-0 with 18 strikeouts, allowed just 4 walks and had a 2.40 earned run average. At third base, Heagy committed just one error in 55 total chances. The dual-threat sophomore hit safely in all 20 games, as the Cardinals went 21-3.

Turner (Howard Community College | Reservoir H.S.) finished sixth in the 100m at the Hopkins Invitational (Johns Hopkins University) on April 6 with a time of 13.11 and against many Division I, II, and III four-year colleges. Determined to push herself and improve, she ran a personal best 12.56 at Galludet University (April 14), this time winning the event. Turner qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in Utica, N.Y., May 10-12, where she competed in the 100m and 200m. She placed as the national runner-up in the 100m with a time of 13.18. 

Wall (Prince George's Community College | Sparkman H.S.) was named United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men's Athlete of the Week (April 9-15) after placing third in the 400m at the Towson Invitational on April 14 with a time of 48.88. He also placed third in the 800m with a time of 1:58.46 at the Trojan Invitational on April 21 and anchored the Owls' 4x400m squad to a fourth place finish.
