Cougars' Wetzel Signs with MLB's Cubs

Frederick, Md. -- On June 14, former Frederick Community College student-athlete Jacob Wetzel (Walkersville, MD / Walkersville High School) signed with the Chicago Cubs as an undrafted free agent. He expects to report to Arizona for the instructional league sometime in late August or early September.

"It's crazy to think that this is reality," Wetzel said. "Not many people can say they play professional baseball, and I am. I've worked hard for this and I'm extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play with the Cubs."

While at FCC, Wetzel turned in a stellar career. In 2019, he batted .377.510.667 and broke the single-season record with 11 triples. He recorded 61 hits, six of which were homers and seven doubles.

Wetzel was off to a hot start this past spring, hitting .333/.508/.542 before the shortened season ended.

"I couldn't be any prouder than I am for Jacob and his family," said Cougars head baseball coach Rodney Bennett. "He was a pleasure to coach and always represented [Frederick] Baseball with class. Once in a lifetime opportunity and we wish him nothing but success in his next chapter."
