Maryland JUCO Names Heuer, Wetzel Baseball/Softball Athletes of the Month

BALTIMORE -- The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) has selected Marissa Heuer (softball) and Jacob Wetzel (baseball) as its Softball and Baseball Athletes of the Month for March 2019.  

Heuer (CCBC Catonsville |Severna Park H.S.) 

A native of Severna Park, Md., Heuer began the season strong in the circle, with wins against Chesapeake, Garrett and Montgomery, while striking out 26 and walking just two in those three games. For the month, she was 11-1 with 80 strikeouts and just 20 walks in 72 innings pitched. On March 27 vs. Garrett, she struck out a career-high 12 batters, while walking none. At the plate, she had a slash line of .420/.524/.667 with three homers, eight doubles, and 31 RBIs in 26 games. Her month was highlighted on March 30 vs. Niagara, as she went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs.

Wetzel (Frederick Community College | Walkersville H.S.)

The freshman outfielder had a stellar start, hitting .425.533.795 with two homers, three doubles, two triples, scored 29 runs and had 39 RBIs in 23 games. In 73 at bats, the Walkersville, Md. native struck out just 11 times and drew 15 walks. He had a career-high six RBIs in two games (March 2 season opener vs. Delta College, March 16 vs. Cecil College) and in two other games he drove in five. Wetzel had 10 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. In the field, Wetzel committed just one error in 33 total chances, with 31 putouts and one assist.
