Prince George's, Montgomery Grab NJCAA Region XX Division III Titles

COLUMBIA, Md. -- Prince George's Community College men's soccer and Montgomery College women's soccer on Sunday won NJCAA Region XX Division III soccer championships, in tournaments hosted by Howard Community College.

Men
Prince George's Community College Owls on Sunday, Oct. 30 defeated the Montgomery College Raptors 1-0 to capture the NJCAA Region XX Division III Men's Soccer title.

In the 78th minute, Alton West scored the game's only goal with an assist from Edwin Claros.

The Owls (13-6) will now play in the NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship tournament hosted by Herkimer County Community College, November 9 – 13 at Wehrum Stadium.

Prince George's spent the majority of the first half controlling the ball in its offensive half, but were not able to tack one up on the scoreboard. 

A hard fought battle continued in the second half.  The Owls had five shots on goal, but the strong defense of the Raptors stopped all shots. 

At 77:09 West finally broke the deadlock with his with his 10th goal of the season.

Women
Montgomery College on Sunday, Oct. 30 defeated Howard Community College 2-1 in the NJCAA Region XX Division III Women's Soccer championship.  

The Raptors (16-2) are on a 14-game winning streak and has outscored its opponents 91-10. 

Nathaly Alvear leads the nation in assists with 28 and tied for second is her teammate Ariella Amaguana with 15.  

The Dragons (11-6) posed a challenge for the Raptors as Howard scored early and the Raptors trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Howard's defense made it difficult for the Raptors to get quality shots off or pass the ball cleanly.

But in the 69th minute, Alvear served up a ball off a free kick that found Gaelin Hirabayashi, in a sea of black jerseys, who headed the ball into the goal to tie the game.  

Ten minutes later, Amaguana dribbled the ball through the defense and got off a clean shot that found the back of the net.  

Josselyn Flores, Amaguana, Alejandra Ramos, and Jennifer Pineda were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

The Raptors will travel to Toms River, N.J. to compete in the NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship tournament, November 10-13.
