BALTIMORE (May 4, 2017) – The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) today announced that it has selected Dylan Mansur (men's lacrosse), Kim Cook (softball) and Olivia Canby (women's lacrosse) as its Student Athletes of the Month for April 2017.
Mansur (Anne Arundel Community College) scored 31 goals (3.4/game) on 39 shots on goal (.795) and collected 46 assists (5.1/game) for a total of 77 points (8.6/game). He also had 10 ground balls and caused three turnovers, as the Riverhawks went 7-2 during the month.
A native of Mayo, Md., Mansur scored his 100th point of the season in a 16-4 win over Monroe on April 19. He has the most assists (64) and points (113) in the conference and ranks third in goals (49) this season. For his career, the sophomore has 196 points on 92 goals and 104 assists. Due in part to his impressive play on attack, the Riverhawks earned the No. 5 seed in this year's NJCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship and will play at Nassau Community College on Saturday, May 6 in a quarterfinal game.
Cook and Canby have been voted Co-Maryland JUCO Women's Student-Athlete of the Month.
In 13 appearances, all starts, Cook (Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville) went 12-0, striking out 37 and had a 1.64 earned run average in 76 2/3 innings pitched. She also had 10 complete games. For the season, Cook is second in the Maryland JUCO Conference in wins (17-3), is tied for second in complete games (16), tied for the fifth most innings pitched (121), is tied for sixth with 67 strikeouts and has the third best ERA (2.20)
The Edgewood, Md. native has helped lead the Cardinals to a conference title and No. 1 seed in the NJCAA Region XX Division II Tournament, set to begin Friday at Frederick Community College. A sophomore, Cook is 33-13 in her career with 36 complete games, a 2.29 ERA and 172 strikeouts over 275 2/3 innings pitched.
Canby (Howard Community College) helped lead the Dragons to a 14-1 regular season record, including the Maryland JUCO Conference title with a perfect 8-0 record. In April, she scored 20 goals and had two assists for 22 points. She also snagged 19 draw controls and collected 10 ground balls. She currently ranks sixth in the conference in goals (33), is tied for fifth in draw controls (32) and tied for ninth in points (40).
The Ellicott City, Md. native came up big for the Dragons in games against Anne Arundel and Harford Community College, fellow nationally ranked conference schools. Canby scored five goals and had an assist in a 16-10 win over the Riverhawks (April 20) and netted four goals in a 14-10 win against the Fighting Owls (April 25). She will look to aid the Dragons in its NJCAA Region XX title defense tonight against Anne Arundel. The game is at Howard and scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
