Harford Captures Men's, Women's Presidents' Cups

BEL AIR, MD -- Harford Community College was awarded the men's and women's Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) Presidents' Cups for the 2016-17 season. It's the second time in the history of the award that the Fighting Owls have accomplished the feat.

The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the conference institution that accumulates the most points based on their teams' finish in the regular season of the conference standings. The highest point total is awarded to the first-place team depending on how many schools sponsor the sport in the Maryland JUCO.

The announcement marks the fifth straight women's cup for Harford and second time in three years for the men's.

Harford's women ran away with the title this year, accumulating 44.5 points with its next closest competitor, Montgomery College, tallying 31 points.

Fighting Owls women's basketball earned 13 points for its conference championship with women's soccer earning eight for finishing second, while volleyball took down 10.5 points for a third place finish.

A big resurgence from softball led to a fourth place finish and seven more points, as a third place women's lacrosse season earned three points. Women's cross country earned two points for second place and women's tennis added one point.

On the men's side, conference championships by basketball and baseball earned 15 and 14 points, respectively, as Harford finished with a 42-point total.

CCBC Catonsville came in second with 33 points.

Fighting Owls men's soccer added six points, with cross country contributing 3.5, men's lacrosse with 2.5 and tennis with one.

The conference began awarding the trophy to one school after the 2005-06 season. In 2010, the Maryland JUCO awarded two Presidents' Cups, one to the winner the best programs for each gender.

Harford became the first school in league history to win both cups in the same year during the 2014-15 season.
